Manufacturer’s Press Line goes Automatic and Increases Production Throughput by 60%

A manufacturer of automotive seat component parts contacted ATSI Robotics because they wanted to increase quality and production throughput with an automated press. Their existing manufacturing process used two older 600 ton presses and six operators. They requested that the new system also reduced the number of touches by human operators and that we use their pre-owned robots in order to help reduce their capital costs.

The challenges were that their current robots used an older network for communications, their existing process used an older press master system which was micro processor based, and the new system had to be installed during current production runs which made project coordination paramount. The system also had to fit into an existing layout as the press machines were massive and anchored in a concrete pit which makes them extremely difficult to relocate.

ATSI Robotics designed, supplied and installed a new automated press line. We produced a complete control system design using the latest offering from Allen Bradley, The 5370 Guardlogix PLC. System reliability and available uptime resulted in an OEE greater than 96%. Throughput was increased by 60% and overall quality improved tremendously. The client was thrilled to have more time to make die improvements, with robots loading the dies.
